Summer Marching Band Camp

Summer Marching Band Camp usually starts 3 weeks before the first day of school and runs from Monday to Friday from 7:30 am to 5:00 pm for the first 2 weeks and from 3:00 pm to 6 pm for the third week.

Band camp is mandatory for members of the band and color guard. This is the main preparation a marching band makes before its marching season (learning how to march, learning “sets” on the field, memorizing show songs). So plan your Summer accordingly and if there is a scheduling issue, contact Mr. Sims as soon as possible.

How to Prepare for and Survive Band Camp

HYDRATE

Be sure to bring an insulated, refillable bottle that can be used throughout the day. Drink regularly, as the heat of band camp can dehydrate you quickly. Your body needs its fluids replenished often in the heat.

Don’t wait until you feel thirsty!

CLOTHES AND SHOES

Wear short sleeve shirts and shorts to deal with the heat. Closed toed shoes are a must! Sandals, or slides of any kind will not work outside on the field as injuries can occur.

SUN AND BUG PROTECTION

Suncreen, sunglasses, hat and bug spray are highly recommended as we will be outside as the weather permits.

NUTRITION

Please eat a healthy meal before you come every day. Contrary to what you may think, food on your stomach will not sit like a lump while you are marching. Your body needs fuel to perform at the level necessary for band camp. Avoid all caffeine, greasy foods, carbonated drinks with caffeine, excessive candy or sweets, and dairy foods.

BRING A GOOD ATTITUDE

There’s no substitute for a good attitude when beginning a time of intensive training like band camp.

Come to camp well-rested and ready to work hard each day. Be focused and attentive. Be willing to listen to your director and band camp staff,  as well as student-leadership.

Every marching band season brings with it its own lessons and challenges, so be ready to deal with them with a good attitude and a positive approach. The goal is to have fun while putting a great show on the field.
